Another letter from Ragusa!

Buon giorno!

This past week has been wonderful...last wednesday we went to the Marina di Ragusa to play a little soccer on the beach, and I am constantly amazed by the beautiful world God made for us. Thursday we went to a little paesino called

Chiaramonte Gulfi that is about 45 minutes out from Ragusa. It is very small, on a hill, and very quiet. The central piazza has a church that was built in 1608? and it is gorgeous. We were there visiting a member of our congregation who works there during the week and then comes to her house in Ragusa for the weekend. She has an adorable fabric and clothing store, and we chatted with her and a friend Marianna about their lives there and remembering the war (WWII). It is one thing to hear history from a textbook, and another to hear how the Italians here were scared, had little to eat, had 'oscuramento' every night so they wouldnt get bombed, saw shrapnel in the air, and were happy when the Americans came and helped them. To hear them talk about what life used to be like (official courting, handmade everything, no tourists) really made me grateful for the people in my life who are a bit older. We can learn many things from them.

In other news, I really am loving being a missionary. Saida is really interested in changing her life (from non-practicing Muslim) to our faith, and it is beautiful to see her desire to get to know God and have the faith that he will answer her prayers. Her daughter Nida (22 months) is adorable by the way.

Ok I have to run, sorry this is a bit disorganized. Have a great week!

A prossimo Mercoledi,
Sorella Black

Italian word of the week: lucicante-sparkly (I recently said alucinante-hallucinatory instead of this word...oops).

(So I just heard that Obama won...It is very odd to be here in Italy when it is 4:30 am at home and realize that people here are very much interested in the US politics. Just to let you know, our church encourages people to vote as part of being a good citizen, but they are a politically neutral organization and never suggest to its members who to vote for.)
